The fishing village of Moraira is located 120 kilometers south of Valencia, on the Costa Blanca. It has only 1,600 inhabitants and is worth a visit during a trip to Valencia. A fishing port, beach and cozy beach clubs… Delicious! HISTORY The Mediterranean mix of cultures and a bridge between civilizations has been the face of Moraira for centuries. There has been an Iberian culture, but also an Arab one, for example. Most likely, the Arabs called the village Moraira. For a long time most of Moraira's income came from the fish trade. Only later did the village develop economically, partly due to the raisin trade. MORAIRA'S LIKEUR A little later, around the second half of the twentieth century, came the economic trump card, namely the Moscatel grape. The popular liqueur Mistela was made from this, which is known for its incredibly sweet taste. This was the beginning of tourism in Moraira. In addition to the fine Mistela, travelers enjoy the mild climate, fine beaches and the peaceful nature in the area. MorairaBeach SIGHTSEEING CASTILLO DE MORAIRA The Castillo (castle) de Moraira is also called Castillo de la Mar. This is due to the location of the castle, from here you have a view of the beach and the sea. The castle was built in the eighteenth century with the aim of protecting Moraira from external threats. It's a static building. At the top are seven battlements where the cannons were placed. All in all, the castle is one of the sights of Moraira. You will find the castle at L'Ampolla beach. CHURCHES AND HERMITAGES In Moraira there are two churches (including the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados in Calle Doctor Calatayud Baya 22) and three hermitages. A hermitage is a small monastery with only one monk or sister. You can take a look at these five, but of course you can also admire the outside. BEACHES AND BAYS Moraira has three beaches and four bays. The beaches of El Portet, L'Ampolla and Les Platgetes are sandy beaches with blue and clear sea water. Keep in mind that Les Platgetes in particular is very touristy. Some water activities can be booked at these beaches. For example, at Platgetes beach there is a banana boat and at El Portet you can canoe. There are also four bays: Cala Cap Blanc, CalaL'Andragó, CalaPortixol and CalaLlebeig. Most of these bays are only accessible by car. Especially CalaLleibeg is very beautiful. White-beige rocks more than ten meters high and covered with greenery and flowers. Here and there you might see a Valencian fisherman. ACCESSIBILITY Moraira is located 120 kilometers from Valencia. You can be there in an hour and a half by car. There are also no direct public transport connections to Moraira. One idea is to go to the village via Blablacar.
